Tunisian Crochet Cowl Pattern: Meet Harlowe

The Harlowe Cowl is here, and I couldn’t be more excited to share this new Tunisian crochet pattern with you!

If you love beautiful stitch textures, open lacework, and fabric with incredible drape, I think you’re going to love Harlowe.

The Harlowe Cowl crochet pattern is available now!

A Little Lace, a Lot of Texture

One of my favorite things about Tunisian crochet is just how versatile the fabric can be. By combining different stitches, you can create everything from structured, dense fabric to something beautifully soft and fluid.

Harlowe is all about exploring that softer side of Tunisian crochet.

The pattern combines Tunisian knit stitch, simple stitch, ribbing, and Arrowhead stitch to create sections of rich texture and open lacework. Each stitch pattern brings something different to the design, and I especially love how they work together to give the finished cowl so much visual interest.

And the drape? It’s one of my favorite things about this piece!

The Look of a Shawl, the Ease of a Cowl

What makes Harlowe a little different from a traditional cowl is its construction and shape.

The design begins with just a few stitches and gradually increases to form a triangular point. Once that section is complete, the pattern transitions to balanced increases and decreases that maintain the stitch count while creating the longer section of fabric.

The entire piece is worked flat and then partially seamed to create a comfortable, open V-shaped neckline.

The result is an accessory that has the beautiful pointed silhouette of a triangular shawl but the simplicity of a cowl.

There’s no need to figure out how to wrap or arrange it. Just slip it over your head, and you’re ready to go!

I also love how the shape allows the different stitch textures to be showcased when worn.

Let’s Talk About That Yarn!

For my Harlowe sample, I used the beautiful Kent Fingering base from Terrapin Fiberworks in two colorways.

And let me tell you, this yarn is gorgeous!

It’s incredibly soft, and the combination of cotton and Tencel creates such a lovely, fluid fabric. I especially love how the yarn moves and how beautifully it showcases the different Tunisian crochet stitches.

One of the things I love most about designing is finding the right combination of yarn and stitch pattern, and I think this pairing is particularly special.

If you haven’t tried this base from Terrapin Fiberworks, it’s definitely worth checking out!

What You’ll Need to Make Harlowe

Harlowe is a two-skein fingering weight Tunisian crochet project, making it a wonderful opportunity to use those special skeins you’ve been saving.

Pattern details:

  • Skill level: Adventurous Beginner
  • Technique: Tunisian crochet
  • Yarn: Fingering weight
  • Yarn requirements: Approximately 327 yards of each of two colors (654 yards total)
  • Hook: 5 mm Tunisian crochet hook with a 16-inch or longer cable, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Construction: Worked flat, then partially seamed
  • Stitches: Tunisian simple stitch, knit stitch, purl stitch, ribbing, and Arrowhead stitch

The pattern also includes a row-by-row reference table to help you keep track of stitch patterns and color changes as you work.

While Harlowe features several different stitches, it’s a fun opportunity to expand your Tunisian crochet skills and explore how different textures can work together in one design.

And don’t skip blocking! Blocking is especially important for this pattern because it allows the lacework to open up and helps showcase the fabric’s beautiful texture and drape.

See What My Testers Created!

One of my favorite parts of releasing a new pattern is seeing how other makers interpret the design.

My wonderful testers have created some beautiful versions of Harlowe, each with their own yarn and color combinations. It’s always amazing to see how different yarn choices can give the same pattern an entirely different look.

I’ll be sharing their finished cowls over on Instagram, so be sure to visit @thecraftycrochetier to see their creations!

I’m so grateful for the time, care, and feedback my testers put into helping bring this pattern to life.
