The Corner to Corner (C2C) Beginner Baby Blanket

This Corner to Corner, or C2C blanket, is beginner friendly and works up quickly! Instead of using double crochets, this blanket gets a variation with the extended half double crochet. The extended half double creates a pretty pattern that looks delicate but is strong.

For this blanket, I chose to use Lion Brand Softa than Butter yarn in Sage and White. This yarn is super soft and machine washable, so it will be ideal for a new born baby. I’m making this blanket for a co-worker of mine who is due in 2 months or so and green is her favorite color. She is having a little baby girl, and I think this blanket will be perfect for her!

The blanket alternates 3 rows of the Sage with 1 row of the white. This creates a lovely pattern. The border uses the same colors to create a pretty edging.

The blanket is made into a rectangle by stopping the increases at a certain point only along one side, and continuing to grow along the other side. If you choose not to do this, you will stop your increases at the same time and will create a square instead. My final project was 26 inches wide by 31 inches long.

I’ve made a video tutorial to follow along with the pattern:

What you’ll need:

Worsted weight (4) Yarn – for this pattern I used Lion Brand Softa than Butta. For Color A, I used Sage, and for Color B I used White.

4.5 mm crochet hook – I like the Furls Odyssey for ease of use and how it makes my stitches look!

4 mm crochet hook for the border

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 4″ by 4″ = 6 squares by 6 rows along the horizontal – gauge is not measured along the diagonal nor by sts

Abbreviations:

Ch = Chain

St = Stitch

Slst = Slip Stitch

Hdc = Half Double Crochet

Sc = Single Crochet

Special Stitch – Ehdc = Extended half double crochet. This stitch is similar to a half double crochet. To begin, yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull through. You should have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first loop only. You will have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops. You have now completed 1 extended half double crochet.

Pattern:

Step 1: Ch 6 in Color A. Skip the three chains closest to your hook. In the 4th ch, place a Ehdc. Repeat for the next two ch. You will have a ch 3 and 3 Ehdc. Ch 6 and turn your work. You have made 1 square.

Step 2: Working in the 4th ch from the hook, place one Ehdc. Repeat for the next two chs. Slst into the space created by the previous square’s ch 3 to attach the two squares together. Ch 3, then place 3 Ehdc into the same space. Ch 6 and turn your work. You will have 2 squares at the end of row 2.

Slip Stitching into the neighboring square

Step 3: Working in the 4th ch from the hook, place one Ehdc. Repeat for the next two chs. **Slst into the space created by the square below’s ch 3 to attach the two squares together. Ch 3, then place 3 Ehdc into the same space.** Repeat ****for each square until you reach the end of the row.

Step 4: You will now change colors. When you do your last Ehdc, do not pull through the three loops with Color A. Instead, pull through the loops with Color B to create a smooth transition. Ch 6 and turn your work.

Step 5: Repeat Step 3 with Color B. At the end of the row, change colors back to Color A as described in Step 4. Ch 6 and turn your work.

Step 6: Repeat Step 3 for a total of 3 times in Color A, then transition to Color B and repeat Step 3 once. You will be alternating Color A for 3 rows and Color B for 1 row. Continue this until Row 34.

Step 7: At the end of Row 34, you should be on Color A. When you reach the last square, stop. ^^Slst into the square below and ch 1. Turn your work and Slst along the edge of the square you just made. You will Slst three times. Ch 3. Make 3 Ehdc into the chain space from the square below. Slst into the next square below to connect the rows.^^ You have now stopped growing your blanket along one edge (Edge 1). You will continue to grow your blanket along the other edge (Edge 2). Repeat **** until you reach the end of the row. You are now at Edge 2, your growing edge. This is a good time to watch the video to understand how to begin decreasing your rows.

Slip stitching along the edge when decreasing

Step 8: You will now change colors. When you do your last Ehdc, do not pull through the three loops with Color A. Instead, pull through the loops with Color B to create a smooth transition. Ch 6 and turn your work. Continue **** until you reach the end. You will now be at Edge 1. Follow ^^^^ except that at the end of the slip stitching you will transition back to Color B, then repeat **** until the end.

Step 9: Continue your decreasing at Edge 1 and increasing at Edge 2 until you finish Row 42. Remember to alternate colors as previously described. With Row 43, you will begin decreasing at both edges. This will make the blanket naturally finish. Once you’ve finished the last square, tie off. You will now begin the border.

Step 10: At this point, you may choose to weave in your ends. Alternately, you can do as I did and let the ends be incorporated into the edging. Start with Color B, and start two squares in from any corner. For each square, you will place 3 Hdc along the edge. In the video I show you how to make the border even and consistent. Continue crocheting the Hdc’s along the edge until you reach the corner. In the last st, place 3 Hdc. This will allow you to work around the corner. Continue Hdc until you reach the beginning of your border. Tie off.

Step 11: Using Color A, Slst into the Color B border. For this part of the border, you will Sc into each st except at the corners, where you will place 3 Sc to work around the corners of the blanket. Continue until the end and tie off. Weave in any ends.

Step 12: Block your blanket. You C2C Baby Blanket is now done!
