The Star Stitch Halter Top

Hello all! I’m super excited to share this free pattern with you all. I fell in love with the Star Stitch recently and have been dreaming of all the ways to use it. The first thought that came to my mind was what a lovely neckline this stitch would make.

This top is light and airy, and since it’s also sleeveless, makes a great top to wear to the beach or those summer barbeques. I can’t wait for the weather to get better so I can wear this top out!

The top comes together pretty quickly and is worked from the top down. I started with the neckline and then worked the front and back panels down in increasing rows until I could join them under my arms. From there, the top is worked in the round until finished. I repeated the star pattern at the end to create a pretty border and match the top and bottom of the top.

I’ve created a video tutorial to guide you through the process of making the top. You can watch it here:

Yarn:

For this pattern you will need 2-3 skeins of Lion Brand Jeans Yarn in Khaki, but any worsted weight yarn will work. The amount of the yarn will vary depend on the size you choose. I made this in a medium.

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn, approximately 500 yards for a medium

Size 5.5 mm crochet hook

Size 5 mm crochet hook

Stitch markers

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 4″ by 4″ for the mainbody (not including Star Stitch) = 14 sts x 7.5 rows

Abbreviations:

ch = Chain

sl st = Slip Stitch

Sc = Single Crochet

Hdc = Half Double Crochet

Dc = Double Crochet

Blo = Back Loop Only

RS = Right Side

WS = Wrong Side

Special Stitch: Star Stitch = Row 1: Beginning from the previous Star Stitch, **go through the eye of the star, yarn over and pull through. You should have two loops on your hook. Go through the back loop of the last stitch of the previous star, yarn over and pull through. You should have three loops on your hook. Go through the back loop of the next stitch, yarn over and pull through. Go through the back loop of the next stitch, yarn over and pull through. You will have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull though all 5 sts. Yarn over and pull though to create the eye of the Star Stitch**. Repeat until the end of the row. Row 2: Ch 2 and turn your work. ^^Hdc into the eye and then Hdc into the next st. Each star takes 2 Hdc to complete. Hdc until the end of the row^^. This may seem complicated, but I promise if you watch the video it will make sense!

Pattern:

This pattern is for a medium size. I strongly recommend trying it on as you go and make adjustments to make the pattern fit you.

Step 1: Ch 91. Skip first chain from hook, and working in the back loop of the chain, Sc in each loop for a total of 90 sts. Making sure to keep your work straight (and that your chain isn’t twisted), sl st into the first Sc to begin working in the round. Ch 3, but do not turn your work.

Step 2: Skip the first ch closest to your hook, and begin the first Star Stitch by going into the next loop, yarn over and pull through. Go through the next loop, yarn over and pull through. You should now have 3 loops on your hook. Working in the back loops only, go through the top of the first st, yarn over and pull through. You should have 4 loops on your hook. Go through the next st, yarn over and pull through. You should have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops. Yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook to create the center or the eye of the Star Stitch. To continue, you will follow **** above (Row 1 only). You will have 45 Star Stitches at the end of this row. When you reach the end, sl st into the first st. This is now the RS of your work.

Step 3: Ch 2 and turn your work. You are now working on the WS of your work. Follow ^^^^ above until the end of the row. You will have 90 sts at the end of this step. Trim your end and tie off.

Step 4: Using Stitch markers, count 15 sts on each side of the seam for a total of 30 sts. From each of the stitch markers, count 15 and place stitch markers. You will now have 4 stitch markers with a distance of 30 sts – 15 sts – 30 sts – 15 sts. The 30 sts will make the front and back panels and the 15 sts will stay open to create the arm holes. The 30 sts with the seam makes up the back panel.

Step 5: Sl st into one of the sts with a stitch marker for the back panel. Blo Dc in each of the sts until you reach the next stitch marker. You should have 30 Dc. Ch 2 and turn your work.

Step 6: In the first st, place two Dc. Dc in each st until the last stitch. In the last stitch, place 2 Dc. Ch 2 and turn your work. (32 sts)

Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for a total of 11 times. Trim your yarn and turn your work. (50 sts)

Step 8: Sl st into one of the sts with a stitch marker on the front panel. Blo Dc in each of the sts until you reach the next stitch marker. Ch 2 and turn your work. (30 sts)

Step 9: In the first st, place two Dc. Dc in each st until the last stitch. In the last stitch, place 2 Dc. Ch 2 and turn your work. (32 sts)

Step 10: Repeat Step 9 for a total of 12 times. (52 sts)

Step 11: Lay your work flat with the back panel below the front panel. Ch 6 and sl st into the first st on the back panel. Flip over your work so the back panel is now on top. In the same st, place 2 Dc. Place 1 Dc in the remaining sts along the back panel until the last st. Place 2 Dc in this st. Chain 6 and sl st into the first st of the front panel. Your panels should now be connected. Ch 2 and turn your work. (116 sts)

Step 12: Place 1 Dc into the first st and 1 Dc in each st until you get to the chains. Place 1 DC into each of the 6 loops on the chain. Continue placing 1 Dc in each st until you get to the next ch. Place 1 Dc into each of the six loops on the chain. Sl st into the first st, ch 2 and turn your work. Place a stitch marker in the first ch to keep track. (116 sts)

Step 13: Place 1 Dc in each st for a total of 116 sts. Sl st into the first st, ch 2 and turn your work.

Step 14: Repeat Step 13 until you reach your desired length. I did a total of 31 rows (not including the Star Stitch neckline). Ch 3 and turn your work ONLY if you are not facing the RS. If you are already on the RS, do not turn your work.(116 sts).

Step 15: Skip the first ch closest to your hook, and begin the first Star Stitch by going into the next loop, yarn over and pull through. You will have 58 Star Stitches at the end of this row. When you reach the end, sl st into the first st.

Step 16: Ch 2 and turn your work. You are now working on the WS of your work. Follow ^^^^ above until the end of the row. You will have 116 sts at the end of this step. Ch 1 and turn your work

Step 17: Blo Sc in each st. Trim your yarn and tie off your work. You will have 116 sts. Seam in any ends and block you work. Your Star Stitch Halter Top is done!!
