Crochet V-neck sweater variation

If you haven’t checked out my Easy V-neck sweater, don’t worry – I have a new variation of the summer top out! My previous pattern was based on a yarn that I had gotten on clearance and was no longer available, but this pattern uses Paintbox Yarns that you can easily order from Lovecrafts. When I purchased it, I ordered in a multipack to save a bit.

This pattern uses about 7 skeins of yarn for the medium, but you will need to adjust based on size. Since the yarn is cotton, I think it will hold up well to warmer summer weather. The pattern uses the single crochet mesh stitch or single crochet column stitch to create a sweater that has a lovely design and works up quickly.

I wanted this top in black, but I didn’t realize how difficult black yarn is to video! I used Pure Black for the actual short sleeved sweater. and Dusty Lilac for the demo version. Watch the video tutorial below:

Pattern:

***Pattern is available Small (Medium, Large, X-Large) measured in US sizes – please remember that you can adjust the sweater to fit you – if you need to increase the armholes, do so. If you are tall, increase the initial chain to suit you. The pattern was made in medium. The small and large sizes have not been tested. Please try the pattern on as you go and make any adjustments as needed.

This sweater is oversize with lots of ease. Size down for a tighter fit, or half size if needed.

Begin by chaining 172 (182, 190, 200).

Row 1 – Sc in 2nd chain from hook (skipping closest chain). *Ch 1, sk 1 st, Sc 1*, Repeat ** continue until end. You should end with a Sc. Ch 1 and turn . The ch 1 does not count as anything. Total sts = 171 (181, 189, 199)

Row 2 – Sc in 1st St, *Ch 1, sk 1 st, Sc 1*, repeat ** until end. Ch 1 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 upto and including Row 42 (45, 48, 54)

Fold the pattern in half and measure 9 inches from the fold on the front panel and place a stitch marker. Measure 1 inch from the fold on the back panel and place a stitch marker. This will be your neck opening. The stitch markers should be placed in a single crochet and not a chain space. Count the sts in between the stitch markers. This number will be how many you chain in the next step.

Row 43(46, 49, 55): Sc in 1st st, *Ch 1, sk 1 st, Sc 1* until you reach the stitch marker (this should be a Sc). Chain the number you counted above step, skip the same amount of sts until you get to the next stitch marker. Sc into the second stitch marker. Continue ** until end. Ch 1 and turn. This provides an approximately 10 inch neckline (9 inches for the front panel and 1 inch on the back panel). The chain will appear longer initially, but once you start the pattern it will match up.

Row 44 (47, 50, 56): Continue pattern ** including the chain, until you reach the end. Continue pattern, ensuring the you continue the Single Crochet Mesh stitch by continuing to crochet each Sc into the the Sc of the previous row.

Row 45(48, 51, 57) – 84 (90, 96, 108): repeat row 2, then tie off.

Seaming together:

Fold sweater in half to create front and back panels.

Count 24(27, 33) sts from the neck down on each side for sleeve openings. You should have a total of 48 (54, 66) sts total. Place stitch markers to keep track of sleeve openings.

From the bottom corners, start seaming up with sides using any method you choose. I used the whip stitch. Stop when you reach the stitch markers and tie off.

Weave in any ends.

Hem:

For the border I did a lattice pattern. The lattice pattern is worked in multiples of 6, so I’ve made all the sizes end up sts in multiples of 6. If you adjust the pattern to fit you better, please make sure that when you begin your hem your total number of Sc is in multiples of 6.

Find the midline on the back panel of the sweater and follow it down to the bottom edge. Slip stitch into bottom edge, and into that same st, place 1 Sc.

Continue Sc around the bottom of the sweater. Keep in mind that each row from the body of the sweater will get 1 Sc. Continue all the way around until you reach the first Sc, working in the round. You should have 168 (180, 192, 216) sts. Slip st into the first Sc, ch 5 and turn your work.

Sk 2 sts, and Sc into the 3rd. ***Ch 5, sk 2 and Sc into the next st.*** You will be placing Sc into every third st. Continue around until you get back to your first Sc. ^^Sl st into that Sc, then sl st into the first three chains^^. You should now be in the middle of the chain. Repeat ****** until you reach the end of the row, then repeat ^^^^. Continue this until you reach the length of the lattice you prefer. I did four rows. For the last row, once you sl st into the first ch of that row, place 3 Sc into the chain space. Place 3 Sc into each ch sp until you reach all the way around. Sl st into the 1st Sc, then ch 1 and turn your work. Place 1 Sc into each Sc from the row before until you reach all the way around.

I did two rows of Sc around the edge of the lattice before tying off.

I recommend blocking this sweater. I use blocking mats and pins after wet blocking with a safe detergent. I shaped my top during the blocking process to give it a bit of a waist.
