The Carisma Shawl

Are you looking for a beginner friendly Tunisian Crochet Pattern? This is the perfect pattern for newbies or folks who are looking for a fun and quick make! The best thing about this pattern is that it is lightweight with lovely drape, yet super cozy!

You can purchase this pattern here on Ravelry, or here on Payhip!

For the yarn, I used Gold Rush in Stellina by Sewrella Yarn. I couldn’t be more pleased with this color. Sewrella Yarn is usually available seasonally and in special drops – you can find out more here!

I’ve created a brief video tutorial to guide you through the important parts of making this shawl, and I’ve included three different ways to finish the edges! You can find the video here:

If you aren’t familiar with the Tunisian Simple Stitch (which is the main stitch used in this pattern), I have a video tutorial here:

This shawl has the most beautiful curve to it – with a series of varying increases and decreases, I was able to create this soft crescent moon shape.

For this pattern, you’ll need approximately 1100-1200 yards of fingering weight yarn. I used closer to 1100, but a few of my testers who had a looser gauge used closer to 1200.

I also used a 5mm Tunisian Crochet Hook with a 24″ cable. I love my Ginger’s Pride set – there are all the sizes of hooks as well as cables and stoppers. I got mine on Amazon and am super happy with my purchase.

I also used all the extra notions – scissors, tape measure, stitch markers and a tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Here’s a little information about the gauge swatch in case you want to follow along with the video. I use the standard return for Tunisian crochet for this pattern.

Gauge:  4” by 4” (10 cm by 10 cm) = 19 sts of Tunisian simple stitch (Tss) by 18 rows; Gauge is measured after blocking.

To make a gauge swatch:

Ch 25.

Row 1: Working in the back bumps, pick up a st in the 2nd ch from the hook.  Pick up a st in the remaining sts.  RetP.  (25 sts)

Row 2.  Tss each st until the last st.  Lts in the last st.  RetP.  (25 sts)

Repeat Row 2 for 22 more rows, until you have 24 rows total.  Sl st BO.  Remember to block!

As I mentioned above, I have three different ways to finish the edges of the shawl – leave them as is with the straight edge, make an infinity shawl or create a rounded border. The rounded border is my favorite since it’s so different!

I really hope you make this shawl – the pattern is just lovely. If you do, I’d love to see it! Please tag me on Instagram with @thecraftycrochetier and use #carismashawl. My testers made some incredible version – check out the hashtag to see more.
