The Evalin Shawlette

For me, inspiration in designing comes from many areas – many times from the yarn itself. In the case of the Evalin Shawlette, inspiration came from both the yarn and the names of the yarn. Explorer Knits and Fibers released these two colors – You Do Not Yield and Fireheart, inspired by the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas. Coincidentally, I had just finished reading the series and the books were weighing heavily in my mind. I fell in love with the colorways and knew I had to design something in them. Inspired by the names and the story, I named the shawl after Aelin’s mom Evalin.

The original shawl ended up being too long, and after playing game of yarn chicken, I opted to make a second, shorter version, hence “shawlette”. In this version, I used yarn from The Frosted Stitch and Coast to Coast Yarn Company.

The second version is the one in the pattern, with a slightly shorter length, and worked with alternating the solid sections instead of wings of each color.

You can find the pattern available for purchase on Ravelry and Payhip!

I’ve also created a video tutorial to help guide you through the process:

I love making patterns accessible – I know not everyone understands thins the same way, which is ahy I like to provide a video tutorial. This pattern also has a table to make it easy to follow and stitch diagrams for those who prefer to see the pattern that way. For this pattern, you’ll need to know both the Tunisian Knit Stitch and the Tunisian Smock Stitch. I have video tutorials for both – you can find them here:

And here:

One of the things I love about this shawl is how the color choices affect the final design. You can see that here in my two versions, but it’s really evident in the tester versions. See them here:
