Drape is probably one of my favorite things about Tunisian Crochet, and when I design it’s one of the things in the forefront of my mind – how will this make drape? How can I make the drape better? Sometimes this has to do with yarn weight or hook size, but the shape of the handmade can also factor into this. With this new shawl pattern, I had all three in mind when designing.

The design was a collaboration with Erin at Yarn Matter. She asked me to design a pattern with her gorgeous, squishy yarn and I was immediately inspired when I saw the colorways. These colors are part of her Rainbow After the Storm minis, and they are perfect for fading or striping. This pattern is now available on both Payhip and Ravelry. And there is a video tutorial to guide you through the making process.
This is also a great project for using leftovers or scraps – some of my testers did just that, while others used 2 skeins to make a two tone project. Check them out here:
The buttons on this project are decorative, and can be omitted, but I love the details they add. I used Ebony buttons from Tinker’s Hollow. I also used a fun stitch – the Tunisian Crossed Stitch, for a more open stitch with great drape.

Here’s what else you’ll need for this project:
- full skein plus 7 minis of fingering weight yarn
- C1 (full skein) – 320 yards
- C2-C8 (minis) – 85 yards each
- 5.5 mm (US I-9) Tunisian crochet hook with 16” to 22” cable and stopper (or hook to achieve gauge)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- 4 Stitch markers
- Blocking supplies
- Buttons (optional)
