Sometimes a shawl is a labor of love – which is what the Aurora Shawl is for me. I wanted to create a giant shawl with tons of drape, and the most perfect increases. I made the first version, and while the drape was gorgeous, the shaping wasn’t where I wanted it. So back to the drawing board, but the second version was exactly what I wanted.

This Tunisian crochet shawl pattern is mainly composed of the knit stitch, but has two variations of the knit stitch – the extended knit stitch and the purled knit stitch. This created beautiful lacy sections and perfect border stitches to delineate the sections.

This pattern is available on Payhip and Ravelry, and also has a video tutorial that you can watch here to guide you through the stitches, increases and how to bind off:
For my yarn, I used the most beautiful colorway Paper Flowers by Treehouse Knits. I have purchased more yarn from this brilliant dyer and I can’t wait to show it to you. I did mention how big this shawl is correct? Check out these dimensions!
Here’s what you’ll need for this pattern:
- 3 skeins of fingering weight yarn, approximately 1274 yards
- 6.0 mm (US J/10) Tunisian crochet hook with a minimum 20” cable, or hook to meet gauge
- 3 stitch markers – denoted as A, B, C
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Blocking supplies
Yarn Notes: For this sample I used Treehouse Knits Paper Flowers in her Spruce Sock Base (437 yd/100g and 10% Nylon, 90% Extra Fine SW Merino).
I recommend using a lightly speckled, lightly variegated, tonal or solid colored yarn for this shawl. Check out the tester versions of this shawl here, and follow me on Instagram for more:
I hope this shawl feels like the giant hug it is 🙂
Happy Crocheting!
