The Meridian Shawl — A Cozy Tunisian Crochet Shawl for Every Season

I absolutely love shawls that feel both cozy and elegant—and the Meridian Shawl delivers on both. This bottom-up Tunisian crochet shawl uses just two colors and simple stitchwork to create a lightweight, shimmering fabric perfect for layering. Whether you’re wrapping up for a crisp fall walk or adding a delicate sparkle to your spring wardrobe, the Meridian Shawl has you covered.

Want to make one yourself? You can grab the pattern here on Ravelry and here on Payhip.

Yarn + Inspiration

For this handmade shawl, I used two skeins of fingering-weight yarn:

  • C1: 373 yards
  • C2: 307 yards

The yarn I chose is a stunning blend from Cesium Yarnhttps://cesiumyarn.com/—a mix of 75% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon, and 5% Stellina. That bit of sparkle? It’s magic in the sunlight. ✨

The design began with an idea for movement—meridians crossing a map—and how color could shift gracefully across the fabric. With a structured lattice stitch in C1 and a soft, knitted look in C2, this pattern brings out the best of Tunisian texture.

Construction + Stitches

The Meridian Shawl is worked from the bottom up, increasing on both ends of each row. It begins in Tunisian Lattice Stitch (Tls) and transitions into Tunisian Knit Stitch (Tks) using a clever color shift. Once the contrast color reaches full width, the shawl splits into two diagonal wings, giving it a beautifully balanced drape across the shoulders.

The pattern includes:

  • Full row-by-row instructions
  • Stitch chart (with color counts!)
  • Tunisian Lattice and Tks definitions
  • Skill level: Advanced beginner

And don’t worry—there’s a video tutorial if you need help with any techniques.

Yarn Notes

If you’re using non-wool blends or yarns with high acrylic content, you may need to size up your hook for proper drape. A quick swatch will help you hit gauge!

The Stellina in my yarn added just the right shimmer—highly recommend if you’re looking for a bit of sparkle.
