The Catelyn Cowl – A Tunisian Crochet Pattern

I adore cowls, capelets and ponchos. They are the best layering pieces for our shoulder seasons, or to create extra warmth in the winter. When I was designing the Catelyn Cowl, I wanted something that was super cozy, not too difficult to make and the perfect layering piece. Want to make one yourself? Find the pattern here on Ravelry and here on Payhip.

For this handmade piece, I used 3 skeins of DK weight yarn, about 246 yards each. The yarn I used was from Montana Crochet, and if you aren’t familiar with Ashley’s yarn, you should absolutely check her out. Her colors are amazing, and her yarn just works up in the most stunning way. I reached out to Ashley to share the cowl when it was finished, and a collaboration was born. Ashley created kits for the cowl, and in gorgeous options like stellina and tweed. The yardages for those yarns was at 231 yards, so this pattern contains two options – one longer pattern for 246 yards and a shorter one for 231 yards. This was you can purchase a kit and still be able to make the cowl!

I love the Tunisian crochet ribbing I used for the collar and for the border. It’s a simple two row repeat. If you haven’t made this type of ribbing before, no worries! You can watch the video tutorial below to see how.

The testers made some gorgeous versions – they used the kits from Ashley. One of the testers used the same color for the collar to start the main body to create a beautiful fade. Check them out here, and follow me on Instagram to see what I’m working on next!

For this pattern, you will need the following:

  • 3 different colors of DK (CYC 3) weight yarn
    • C1 – 246 yards
    • C2 – 175 yards
    • C3 – 200 yards
  • 6.5 mm (US ) Tunisian crochet hook with 16” to 22” cable and stopper (or hook to achieve gauge)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Gram scale
  • Scissors
  • 6 Stitch markers
  • Blocking supplies

Yarn Notes: For this pattern, I used yarn from Montana Crochet in her Cozy DK base (100% superwash Merino, 246 yd/100 g).   I used the colorways Wildling (C1), Direwolf (C2) and Kingslayer (C3).  This pattern can be adapted to shorter yardages.

If you use yarn that is predominantly acrylic, please note that you will likely have to size up for your hook and will lose some drape.
