The Alia Shawl

I am so excited to finally share the Alia Shawl with you all! This design holds a very special place in my heart because it began with a gift. My dear friend, Alea, gifted me some stunning mohair yarn, and as I felt the fibers, I knew I wanted to create something that captured that exact feeling of light, airy elegance.

The Inspiration & The Yarn

Named after the friend who inspired it, the Alia Shawl is a celebration of texture and versatility. For this design, I partnered with Malabrigo to showcase how different yarn combinations can completely transform a piece. I couldn’t choose just one look, so the pattern includes instructions for two distinct versions:

  • The Mohair Version: A luxurious blend of Malabrigo Mohair and Mechita (a beautiful single-ply yarn). This version is a cloud-like dream with incredible drape.

  • The Fingering-Only Version: Created using Malabrigo Ultimate Sock. This version is crisp, defined, and highlights the intricate Tunisian stitches perfectly.

Construction & Customization

While both versions result in a stunning accessory, they play by slightly different rules!

  • Hook Sizes: For the mohair version, I used a 5.5 mm hook for the body and transitioned to a 6 mm Tunisian hook for the border to maintain that flowy edge. For the fingering-only version, I used a 7 mm hook throughout the entire project.

  • Yarn Usage: Please note that the fingering-weight version does require more yardage than the mohair blend.

All detailed yardage requirements and specific hook instructions are included in the pattern notes. Note: This is an intermediate shawl pattern – I recommend experience in Tunisian crochet as the lace section will need it!
