The Gradual Beginner Shawl: A Free Tunisian Crochet Shawl Pattern

Tunisian Crochet’s Magic

Tunisian crochet is often described as a beautiful blend of knitting and traditional crochet, resulting in a unique, woven-like fabric that is as cozy to wear as it is meditative to make. I created this pattern because I want you to love this craft as much as I do. There are so many stunning stitches to explore, and you can achieve the most excellent drape if you just know the right techniques. This free Tunisian Crochet shawl pattern is designed to be your gateway into that rhythmic, meditative world. The pattern is a mini-book at 25 pages and it the perfect “how to” to get you started.

The Gradual Beginner Series – Free Patterns to get You Started

This pattern was deeply inspired by Cat and Penny’s Gradual Beginner series at Cesium Yarn. I wanted to take that concept of stepping-stone learning and apply it to the hook. This shawl is designed specifically to build the muscle memory that eventually makes your crafting feel automatic. The Gradual Beginner Series is a perfect how to guide to creating a free shawl pattern.

Instead of throwing every technique at you at once, we walk through skills together, giving you plenty of time to practice each one before moving on to the next. Each section builds directly on the skills you just learned. My goal is for you to feel empowered as you watch your fabric grow from a few simple stitches into a sophisticated, textured accessory.

Building Community: In The Loop

Crafting is always better with friends! One of my favorite parts of being a designer is the community we’ve built together. If you’re looking for a place to share your progress, ask questions, or just hang out with fellow fiber enthusiasts, I’d love for you to join our In The Loop Discord server. It’s a space where we support each other through every frog and celebrate every finished object. It’s the perfect place to show off your version of the Gradual Beginner Shawl.
