The Rustic Pocket Shawl

The Rustic Pocket Shawl is a lovely shawl that makes a great gift for anyone. The pattern and the yarn are timeless and neutral.

This particular shawl is a gift for my cousin who is approximately 5’10” or 70 inches tall. I wanted to make the shawl long enough for him to wear comfortably.

This pattern is beginner friendly as there are two patterns, and both are single row repeats. The main body of the shawl is made with the Moss Stitch, while the edges of the shawl and pockets are a ribbed border made of back loop only single crochets.

The pockets are made by folding over the edges and seaming them closed while incorporating the ribbed border. It may sound difficult, but trust me it’s not! I have a video tutorial here to help guide you along the pattern:

What you’ll need:

DK weight yarn, amount will depend on your length

5.5 mm and 6 mm Crochet hook. I used Furls Odyssey Crochet Hooks, found here.

Tape Measure

Stitch Markers

Tapestry needle

Scissors

For the yarn, I used Stylecraft Yarn’s Life DK in Pebble Nepp. I enjoyed using this yarn – the yarn didn’t split and it gave the shawl a lovely rustic quality. The little flecks in the yarn also added depth to the pattern. I used a little more than 3 skeins of the yarn, which was was a bit more than 1000 yards.

Gauge: 4″ by 4″ = 19 stitches wide and 18 rows high in the Moss Stitch

Abbreviations:

Ch: chain

Sk: Skip

Sc: Single Crochet

BLO: Back loop only

St: Stitch

Special Stitch: The Moss Stitch – this stitch is Ch 1, skip 1, SC 1. You will SC in the ch space from the previous row.

Pattern:

This pattern isn’t exactly a pattern but more of a guide – I will include the sts I used in making this for an arm span of 70 inches

Step 1: Calculate your total length: Measure your armspan from fingertips to fingertips. Or conversely, just use your height as a guide. For example, if you are 5’10”, your arm span is 70 inches. For pockets that are 7 inches deep, add 14 inches to your total length. For my shawl, the total length before folding over the pockets will be 84 inches (70+14).

Step 2: Begin with your 5.5 mm Crochet hook and Ch 9. Skip the first chain from the hook and SC in the 8 remaining chains. Ch 1 (this chain 1 doesn’t count as a stitch) and turn your work.

Step 3: BLO SC in each of the 8 SC of the previous row. Ch 1 and turn.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 for a total of 42 rows.

Step 5: At the end of Row 42, ch 1 and rotate your work so you will be working along the length of the ribbed border. Switch to your 6 mm Crochet Hook. SC in each row for a total of 42 SC.

Step 6: Ch 2 and turn. Skip the first st and SC in the second st. *Ch 1, sk 1 and SC 1*. Repeat until the end of the row. You should end with a SC. Ch 2 and turn your work.

Step 7: Sk the first SC and SC in the ch space. *Ch 1, Sk 1 and SC 1*. Repeat until the end of the row. You will always SC in the ch space of the previous row and will always end with a SC.

Step 8: Repeat Step 6 until you achieve the length of the shawl you want, plus the additional 7 inches for each of the pockets. For an 84 inch shawl (70 inches in length plus 14 inches for the pockets), I made approximately 340 rows. Measure as you go for your arm span! For the last row, SC in each SC and ch space from the previous row. Tie off and begin border for second pocket.

Step 9: For second ribbed border, repeat steps 2 and 3 with your 5.5 mm Crochet hook. . Seam the border to the end of the shawl.

Step 10: Fold over the ends of the shawl by 7 inches on each end and use stitch markers to hold in place. Set shawl aside.

Step 11: Ch 11 with your 5.5 mm Crochet hook. Sk the chain closest to the hook and SC 10. Ch 1 and turn your work.

Step 12: BLO SC in the 10 SC of the previous row. Ch 1 and turn.

Step 13: For a 70 inch shawl, repeat Step 12 for a total of 260 rows. Leave a long tail to seam onto body of shawl.

Step 14: Repeat Steps 11-13 for the second border.

Step 15: Lay your three pieces (body and two ribbed borders) on a long surface and use stitch markers to hold everything in place.

Step 16: Seam up both sides and weave in any ends. Your Rustic Pocket Shawl is done!

  2. Hi Serena,
I’m following your guide on this blog and have noticed that there are 2 step 5’s. Do i just assume this is a type and add 1 to each step after?
    Thanks.

    • Hi Kerryn! Yes, it’s typo. All fixed now 🙂 Thank you for letting me know. I hope you enjoy the pattern!
