The 1-2-3 Shawl

The 1-2-3 Shawl is a very beginner friendly pattern that uses 1 single skein of yarn! The pattern is a very easy repeat using the Half Double Crochet and the occasional chain stitch. The shawl is an asymmetrical triangle with a beautiful drape. I love how pretty this shawl turned out! The free pattern is below, and there is a video tutorial also to help guide you through the pattern.

The pattern is easy to follow and has a great way to keep track of how many stitches you have in each row – the number of stitches and rows is always the same! In row 1, you will have 1 half double crochet, and in row 2 you will have two half double crochets. Hence the name, the 1-2-3 Shawl! This continues on all the way to the end and is a great way to keep track of where you are in the pattern.

The pattern always increases on one side and never decreases. By increasing in this way, you get a beautiful edge along one border of the shawl.

I used 1 skein of Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball yarn and it made a small shawl or large scarf. If you’d like a larger shawl, you will definitely need two skeins. Watch the free video tutorial here:

What you’ll need:

Worsted weight yarn – I used Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball in Soothing Blue which is 518 yards.

5 mm Crochet Hook – I used Furls Odyssey Crochet Hooks

Stitch Marker

Tapestry Needle

Scissors

Gauge: Gauge is from unblocked shawl – 4″ x 4″ = 16.5 sts by 10.25 rows from the HDC only rows.

Abbreviations:

Ch: chain

Sk: Skip

HDC: Half Double Crochet

St: Stitch

Pattern:

Step 1: Ch 3

Step 2: Sk the two chs closest to the hook and HDC in the third chain from the hook. Ch 2 and turn. The Ch 2 will be done at the beginning of every row and doesn’t count as anything (1st)

Step 3: Place 2 HDC in the only st. Ch 2 and turn (2 sts).

Step 4: Place 1 HDC in the first st, then two HDC in the second st. Ch 2 and turn your work (3 sts).

Step 5: Place 2 HDC in the first st, then 1 HDC in each remaining st. Make sure to place the stitch marker in the 1st HDC of the row to keep track of which st gets the increase. Ch 2 and turn you work.

Step 6: Place 1 HDC in each st until you get to the stitch marker. Place 2 HDC in that st. Ch 2 and turn.

Step 7: Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until you reach row 81.

Step 8: At Row 81, you will begin the Mesh Half Double Crochet Stitch. Begin by placing a HDC in the first st. **Ch 1, sk 1 then HDC**. Repeat **** until you reach the stitch marker. You should have placed a HDC in the st before the marker. Ch 1 and HDC into the last st (which should have your stitch marker). Ch 2 and turn.

Step 9: Place 2 HDC in the first st (Don’t forget to place your stitch marker in the first st to keep track of which st gets the increase). Place 1 HDC in the ch space. For the remaining sts, place 1 HDC in each st and 1 HDC in each ch space. Ch 2 and turn. You should have 82 sts by end of Row 82.

Step 10: Repeat rows 81 and 82 until you get to row 106. Row 105 will be a Mesh Stitch row and Row 106 will be a HDC only row. Ch 2 and turn. (106 sts). Remember that you will always increase at the beginning of even numbered rows and will always increase at the end of odd numbered rows.

Step 11: Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you cannot complete another row. For me, the last row was Row 111. You may choose to add another skein of yarn if you would like a larger shawl.

Step 12: Sew in you ends with a tapestry needle. Block your shawl. Your project is ready!

I hope this pattern was easy to follow and helped make a pretty shawl! Thanks for stopping by and happy crocheting!

xoxo Serena
