The Bobble Infinity Scarf

The Bobble Infinity Scarf is a beautiful scarf/cowl that comes together beautifully. I was inspired for the pattern and colors of this cowl by Claire in the show Outlander. I’ve just started watching the first season (I know I’m behind!), and I’m already so inspired by the knit wear that I have patterns floating through my head as I’m watching. This is the first of several patterns that I’m sure will be inspired by the show.

The cowl can be worn unlooped, looped twice or even looped three times! That’s one of the best parts of this pattern – the versatility.

This cowl uses the bobble stitch, which is a great stitch but is a yarn eater. I used a little bit more than two skeins of this gorgeous yarn from Lion Brand. This color was Morning Java in the Ferris Wheel line, but I think any of the colors would turn out beautifully in this pattern.

Below is the free pattern as well as a YouTube video tutorial that will guide you through the pattern as well as some tips to help you along.

What you’ll need:

Lion Brand Ferris Wheel Yarn in Morning Java, approximately 2.5 skeins. Alternatively, about 650-700 yards of a worsted weight yarn that matches gauge will work.

6 mm Crochet hook. I used Furls Odyssey Crochet Hooks, found here.

Stitch Markers

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Gauge: The gauge is for the whole pattern with the alternating rows – 4″ x 4″ = 10 sts by 8.75 rows

Abbreviations:

Ch: chain

Sc: Single Crochet

Dc: Double Crochet

Hdc: Half Double Crochet

Bb st: Bobble Stitch

Special Stitch: Bobble stitch – Yarn over and go through st, then yarn over and pull through st. You should have three loops on your chain. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook. **Yarn over and go through the same st, then yarn over and pull through. Pull through the first two loops on your hook.** Repeat **** three more times for a total of five times. You should have 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all six loops. This is a bobble stitch. If this is confusing, please watch the accompanying video.

Pattern:

Step 1: Chain 206 sts; skip first ch from the hook and work a Sc in the back bump of the next ch (ch 205). Continue making Sc in the back bump of each ch until the end. You will have 205 Sc by the end.

Step 2: Ch 2 and turn (the Ch 2 does not count as a st in every row). In the first st, make a Dc. In the next st, make a Bb st. In the third st, make s Dc. Repeat Bb st and Dc for the rest of the row. You will have 205 sts at the end. You should end with a Dc.

Step 3: Ch 2 and turn. Make a Hdc in the first st. Continue Hdc in each st until the end. You will have 205 sts.

Step 4: Ch 2 and turn (the Ch 2 does not count as a st in every row). In the first st, make a Dc. In the next st, make a Bb st. In the third st, make s Dc. Repeat Bb st and Dc for the rest of the row. You will have 205 sts at the end.

Step 5: Repeat Steps 3 and 4 five more times until you have 7 rows of Bb sts. Including your first row of Sc, you will have 14 rows total.

Step 6: Ch 1 and turn. In the first st, place a Sc. Continue placing Sc until the end of the row. You will have 205 sts at the end. Tie off, leaving enough extra yarn for seaming.

Step 7: Line up the short edges of the scarf, making sure that there are no twists. Facing the wrong side, whip stitch the edges together. Weave in any ends. Your Infinity Scarf is done!
