The Winter Weather Sweater

When winter rolls in, there is nothing like wearing a thick and cozy sweater! I wanted to design something that would be the perfect top to snuggle in and also be beginner friendly for those who are new to Tunisian Crochet.

By using a bulky weight yarn, this sweater is not only extra warm, but works up fast! I made both versions in less than 2 weeks each.

The first version uses Hue and Me from Lion Brand in Cement. This comes in a variety of colors. A few of my testers used this yarn as well. Check out my Instagram account to see more pics, or search #winterweathersweater on IG.

The second version was all sorts of soft and used Mandala Watercolor, also from Lion Brand in Almond. In my pattern, I also give a alternate border option for the bottom ribbing This second sweater uses the option to make a more loose fitting and drapier sweater.

The pattern uses the Tunisian Simple Stitch and either slip stitch or single crochet ribbing for the borders. If you aren’t familiar with how to make the Tunisian Simple Stitch, I have a video tutorial here:

I also made a video tutorial for the entire sweater to help guide you through the process:

The full pattern can be purchased here on Ravelry or here on Payhip. Check out the tester photos on Ravelry while you are there!

The pattern is available in sizes XS to 5XL and gives modifications for sleeve length and armhole openings. I know when I make my own clothes, I prefer options for customization so I’ve added those.

The video makes a size medium, but you can adapt it based on gauge. I’ve added gauge below to help with adapting the sweater to your fit.

What you’ll need to make this:

Yarn Option 1: Lion Brand Hue and Me

Yarn Option 2: Lion Brand Mandala Watercolor

10 mm Tunisian Crochet Hook with cables (I used the Knitter’s Pride Ginger Tunisian Crochet Hook Set)

9 mm crochet hook

6 mm crochet hook

Scissors

Tape Measure

Stitch markers (in the video I used ones from BaaHumble)

Yarn notes:

570-1400 yard needed, depending on your size.

Since this yarn (Hue and Me) was an acrylic blend, there was less give during blocking and the sweater worked up bulky.  A yarn with more wool may have more drape.  If you use 100% synthetic yarns, use a larger crochet hook to achieve drape.  Also, consider sizing up if you use synthetic yarn for a better fit!

Gauge:

4” by 4” (10cm by 10cm) = 10.5 Tss sts x 8 rows, worked flat, blocked.

To make gauge square (using 10mm Tunisian Crochet Hook):

Row 1: Ch 20.  Working in the back bumps, pick up a st in the 2nd ch from the hook.  Pick up a st in the remaining sts.  RetP.  (20 sts)

Row 2: Tss in each st until the last st.  Lts in the last st.  RetP.  (20 sts)

Repeat Row 2 for another 10 rows for 12 rows total.  Sl st bind off.

I also added an additional neckline option that isn’t in the video:

Optional Neckline Border:

If you find the sts around the neckline to be loose, you can add a Sc border. Use a 9 mm hook.

Round 1: Slip st into one of the neckline sts on the back panel. Sc into that same st.  Place a Sc in each st around the neckline.  At the back and front areas where the necklines meet, do not place a Sc in the row.  Instead, Sc2Tog from the Right Panel to the Left Panel.  Continue Sc in each st around.  Sl st into the first st and fasten off.  (46 sts)

Sc2tog at the “V” of the neckline

I hope you enjoy making your Winter Weather Sweater!
