The Coalescing Shawl – A Tunisian Crochet Pattern

For those of you familiar with my Convergence Shawl, I created a unique shape in modifying a boomerang shawl in crochet. For the Coalescing Shawl, I adapted that idea to Tunisian Crochet and created this lovely shawl.

This shawl is worked side to side in short rows, which is perfect for folks who hate those long return passes. I love them, but I know not everyone does. By working side to side, I could also create wings of different tonal colors, and fade them together with a variegate that has both shades. For this project, I used three colors from the lovely Montana Crochet – Levi’s, Ghost Town and Copper Kings. Ashley from Montana Crochet will also be providing kits for short time during the release!

To find the pattern, look at Ravelry and Payhip. And if you follow me on Instagram, keep an eye out for the coupon code for Ravelry good for the opening weekend of May 3-5th, 2024.

As always, there is a video tutorial to guide you through the process of making:

I also added tassels – I love tassels and the weight it adds to the wings:

If you are intimidated to make tassels, don’t be! I’ve created a video tutorial to help guide you through that process here:

Because of the unique shape of the shawl, blocking is super important to prevent that dreaded tunisian curl and to make the lace sections really stand out! I took a picture of the shawl laid out to demonstrate how I recommend blocking:

For this pattern, you will need the following:

  • 3 different colors of fingering (1) weight yarn, about 240 yards each.
  • 5.5 mm (US I9/5.5mm)Tunisian Crochet Hook with 16” to 22” cable and stopper (or hook to meet gauge)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • 1-2 Stitch Markers (optional)
  • Blocking supplies

Yarn Notes:  I used the colorways “Levi’s, Ghost Town” and “Copper Kings” by Montana Crochet in her SW Merino base – 100% SW Merino (438 yds/100 g).  Yardage does not include tassels.

If you use Acrylic yarn, please note that you will likely have to size up for your hook and will lose some drape.
