The Athena Cowl

At Rhinebeck weekend last year, I had the privilege to attend a yarn event, and at this event I was able to get my first look at Apricity Yarn from TLYarncrafts and Hobbii Yarn. The squish factor on this yarn is amazing! Apricity is a tubular polyamide yarn with Alpaca and wool which help create a super cozy yarn. As soon as I got back, I placed an order. I couldn’t wait to start designing in it.

When the yarn arrived, I started playing around with different stitches, and started with ribbing ideas. I wanted to create a ribbing that mimicked single crochet ribbing, and could be attached to a make along the border without seaming. I finally settled on alternating rows of Tunisian Simple Stitch and Tunisian Purl stitch.

I also wanted to make the coziest design without making it too heavy. I polled my fellow crafting friends who said they’d shy away from a bullky sweater, so I settled on a cowl design. I also wanted to make a pattern that can be worn two ways, and with this cowl you can wear it with the soft rounded edge facing forward or the triangle seamed edge.

This pattern is available on Ravelry and Payhip! And as always, there is a video tutorial to help guide you through the making process:

For this pattern, you will need the folowing:

  • 2 different colors of bulky weight(CYC 5) yarn
    • C1 – 340 yards*
    • C2 – 310 yards
  • 10 mm (US P-15) Tunisian crochet hook with 16” to 22” cable and stopper (or hook to achieve gauge)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • 1-2 Stitch markers (optional)
  • Blocking supplies

Yarn Notes:  I used Apricity by Hobbii Yarn in the colorways Spice and Hickory (131 yards/50 g, 65% Alpaca, 28%Polyamide and 7% wool).

If you use yarn that is predominantly acrylic, please note that you will likely have to size up for your hook and will lose some drape.

*Please note – these are yardages specifically for Apricity.  The testers that used other yarns were closer to 250 yards for each colorway.  Want to see the tester versions? Check out the post below!

If you want to add additional length and width, continue with the second colorway until the pattern reaches the length you want.

I hope you found this pattern and tutorial helpful. If you want to keep up with my crochet adventures, follow me here on Instagram.

Happy Crocheting!
